Woman sentenced in animal shelter break-in

Posted: Updated:

MACON, Ga. (AP) - A woman who broke into a Georgia animal shelter and released dogs leading to deadly fights will serve jail time.

The Telegraph reports that 36-year-old Crystal Gale Fessler pleaded guilty Friday to theft and criminal trespass. Prosecutors say Fessler was drunk when she jumped the fence at the Macon, Georgia shelter on Oct. 16 and opened cages, wrongly believing it was a kill shelter.

Three dogs died in fights, and others were injured.

Fessler's attorney says she didn't intend any harm to the animals. Shelter volunteers say the break-in was traumatic for many dogs.

Fessler was sentenced to a year in jail; including credit for being in jail since Nov. 14. She also must pay a $500 fine, complete 200 hours of community service and attend counseling sessions.
