More protests in Vassar against proposal to house illegal immigrant children

Posted: Updated:
VASSAR, Mich. (WJBK) - Illegal immigrant children could be on their way to  Michigan. It's believed these children will be housed at a social services facility near Saginaw. Another protest was held Monday at City Hall and in front of Wolverine Human Services.

Members of the group Michiganders for Immigration Control and Enforcement (MICE) gathered in Vassar, some carrying rifles. They're angry about an application submitted by the non-profit group out of Grosse Pointe Park seeking a contract to temporarily house up to 120 teenage boys, undocumented immigrants from Central America. The young men are among the tens of thousands of unaccompanied children crossing the border from Mexico.

The group waved American flags, held signs, chanted and prayed. The demonstration was peaceful.

Vassar, a rural community approximately 90 miles north of Detroit with a population of less than 3,000 people, is suddenly thrust into the immigration debate.

City Manager Brad Barrett and other city leaders say they're not taking sides, but they will review Wolverine's permits to make sure housing illegal immigrants is an approved used of the facility. Wolverine's senior vice president was not available to talk on camera Monday, but he recently addressed a crowd at a public meeting. He calls the teens "children fleeing harm's way" and says his group wants to help them as part of a humanitarian mission.

The teens would stay for 2-4 weeks. They'd receive immunizations and basic education before being reunited with relatives or going into foster care while they go through the immigration court system.

Fox 2 is told the proposal is not a done deal yet and no contract has been signed. No timetable has been given on when this matter will be decided.
