PERKINS' PAST: Hometown coach recalls All-Star dreams

Posted: Updated:
STILLWATER, Minn. (KMSP) -

When Glen Perkins took to the mound at Target Field during the All-Star Game on Tuesday night, even spectators had butterflies -- and the Minnesotan who was so proud to represent the Twins is making his hometown coach proud, too.

Stillwater, Minn., was abuzz Wednesday with stories of Perkins' younger days, and even his youth baseball coach was reflecting on how the ambitious boy told him he was headed to the big leagues. In one high school game against Hill-Murray, Perkins struck out 17 -- and that sent his pitching stock soaring.

Glen Perkins shone the brightest on baseball's grandest stage on Tuesday at his home ballpark. He picked up the save, and the American League won the bragging rights.

"It's an experience I'll definitely never forget," he reflected.

Years ago, however, his home ballpark was at Stillwater High School. His old coach, Ricky Michel, said he can remember meeting the young Southpaw and told Fox 9 News that even in elementary school, Perkins had All-Star aspirations.

"He told us in 4th, 5th, 6th grade that he would be a professional pitcher," Michel recalled. "AT the time, you kind of laugh and you go, 'If you work hard, anything is possible.'"

A strong high school career turned into an incredible run in Dinkytown with the Golden Gophers. Fox 9 cameras were there when the Twins made Perkins a top draft pick in 2004, a distinction Perkins wasn't shy about saying he felt he deserved.

"He was just a step ahead of everybody else," Michel said.

On Wednesday, there was plenty of fun to have with Perkins. Fox 9's Paul Blume posted a picture of him from his Stillwater High School yearbook, and Perkins sent a reply right back.
