WONDER LAKE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A suicidal woman was shot and critically injured by police Sunday afternoon after she pointed an assault rifle at officers in northwest suburban McHenry County, police said.

Officers responding to a call of a suicidal person about 5 p.m. found the 53-year-old woman armed with a handgun inside of a residence in the 7400 block of Boston Road in unincorporated Wonder Lake, according to a statement from the McHenry County Sheriff’s office.

The woman made several suicidal statements, and police stayed outside while they communicated with her and attempted to get her to surrender, so that she could be taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation, police said.

She then came out the front door armed with a .223 assault rifle and advanced toward officers, police said. She pointed the rifle at police and was subsequently shot once in the neck.

The woman was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where she remains in the intensive care unit, police said.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid leave, and no charges have been filed in connection with the incident as police investigate.
