City turns down Vinsetta Garage's new parking proposal

Posted: Updated:
BERKLEY, Mich. (WJBK) - Vinsetta Garage, a popular restaurant in Berkley, proposed to tear down several homes and build a parking lot to solve the parking issue in the neighborhood, but the proposal was turned down Monday at city hall.

City Council made the final decision, agreeing with neighbors there has to be another way to figure out the parking dilemma.

Curt Catallo, Vinsetta's owner, purchased four different homes adjacent to the restaurant on Oxford Street. He planned to knock them down and build a parking lot that he said would be manicured. He says he's tried other options which have fallen through.

Neighbors say they don't feel like he has been compromising, adding the parking lot would decrease their property value, create noise, an unsafe environment and it would be unsightly.

Catallo says the decision is what he was expecting.

"I think we go back to Vinsetta Garage and have a hamburger. Unfortunately, denial doesn't fix the problem but we're still committed to finding a solution, and we want to give the folks of Oxford and Eaton [streets] what they want, which is cars off of their streets and we're still looking for a solution," Catallo says.

He adds he thinks the parking problem is a good thing to have, because it shows his business and the city of Berkley is thriving.  He is also says he understands the concerns of the residents and hopes that we can all find a solution that everyone can agree upon.

The topic of decriminalizing marijuana was also discussed at the meeting Monday night. Voters will now vote on that issue on the November ballot.
