MPD to increase police presence in high-crime areas

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

On Wednesday, Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges and Police Chief Janeé Harteau announced that the city's police department will boost resources in north Minneapolis and in hot spots for crime on the city's south side.

Increase to last through Labor Day

In order to boost staffing in high crime areas, the Minneapolis Police Department will approve overtime for four more officers and one supervisor in north Minneapolis, and four more officers in south Minneapolis. The extra staffing will occur between the hours of 6 p.m. and 4 a.m. every day through Labor Day.

"Additional resources right now in these parts of the city will help create a safer city for everyone," said Mayor Hodges. "I have a responsibility for public safety in the city of Minneapolis. I am ensuring the police department has the resources they need to achieve our public safety goals."

The newly-announced increase adds on to a previous increase of bike and foot patrol officers and a doubling of shot-spotter coverage in north Minneapolis. In recent weeks, Harteau herself has been walking the beat on the city's north side and said she believes the second boost will prevent further violence.

"Two weeks ago, the Mayor and I walked the streets of the 4th Precinct. Two days later I biked through the 3rd Precinct," said Harteau. "I heard from residents and shared some of our strategies. Our goal with these additional resources is to further disrupt the environment of violence. Through increased visibility, focused enforcement and continued community engagement this summer, violent crime is down in the past two weeks in those precincts, as it is citywide. I expect that the additional resources we are adding will further enhance this positive trend."

Cano praises decision to add more officers

City councilwoman Alondra Cano, who represents the 9th ward, one of the areas that will see more police, praised the decision as a way to "provide relief to the families and businesses who have suffered from criminal activity."
