Mother upset after her son was able to purchase stun guns online

GARDEN CITY, Mich. (WJBK) - A stun gun is dangerous and illegal - and in the hands of a young teen there's no telling what could have happened.

"He thought it was a toy, he didn't know. For five dollars he's like, 'No way,' and it's very real - very dangerous and very disturbing," says Melissa Morris.

Her 13-year-old son found what he thought was a flashlight on a Facebook app on his phone called Wish List. He had ordered headphones there before and, using his grandpa's debit card, he ordered four of the "toys" for just $20.

They arrived on their doorstep from overseas only to find out they are far from child's play.

"My brother looks and he's like, 'Yeah, it's a flashlight,' and he turns it on and then he shocks himself! He's like, 'Okay, that's not a flashlight,'" says Morris.

It is a flashlight but it is also a stun gun. In fact, it's described online as having a high stopping power of 300,000 volts

Morris took three of the devices to the Garden City Police Department. She kept one in her possession to show Fox 2's Amy Lange, and to warn others.

Garden City Police Chief Robert Muery says local departments can do little to pursue or prosecute these overseas companies peddling weapons to minors. He urges parents to watch what their kids are accessing online.

"The computer, the Internet, a wonderful tool to have in the home but it's also like inviting the devil to hang out in the corner of your house just waiting for an opportunity," says Muery.

"I want other people to know, other parents to know, that this is possible for their children to get a hole of and to monitor them," Morris says.
