Retailers in the Charlotte region are planning discounts to combat the loss of revenue after North Carolina’s elimination of the sales tax free weekend, which traditionally took place the first weekend in August. Some area malls are starting to offer the deals this weekend, a week ahead of South Carolina’s tax free weekend.
Concord Mills is having its “Better Than Tax Free Weekend” this weekend. Some stores at Carolina Place Mall are also offering discounts this weekend, and Carolina Mall in Concord plans to offer deals next weekend, the same time frame as the former tax free weekend in North Carolina.
9-year old Qimya Hanson is back to school shopping at Concord Mills with her grandmother. Hanson said, “You get more clothes, and it’s fun just to shop and when you get back to school and you see all your friends and stuff.”
Hanson’s grandmother, Rita Robinson, said, “We’re trying to catch these bargains because it’s not just one pair of sneakers I’m buying. It’s three, so there’s a bargain to be had.”
Concord Mills Marketing Manager Nan Gray said the mall decided to offer the deals this weekend, in part, to get ahead of other states that still have the sales tax free weekends. Gray said, “We decided to do it the weekend before because there are some neighboring states offering the tax free, so we wanted to give our NC customers a chance to have their own.”
