A suspected arsonist took aim at an apartment in South Daytona, but the man's plan went up in flames. He set himself on fire in the process.
South Daytona Police said Arthur Avery poured gasoline all over the doors, walls, and an old mattress that had been left in the breezeway outside of an apartment in the Spanish Villa complex on South Ridgewood Avenue Saturday morning.
Police said Avery knocked on the door at 9:42 a.m. and asked for someone by the name of "Dred." When the woman living there said she didn't know the man, Avery reportedly started spraying gasoline.
The woman living in the apartment next door was actually outside when it all happened. She told her neighbor Holly McGuire what she saw.
"She watched him douse it, and went down to light the fire, but because he doused it so quickly, he got it all over him and he went up in flames with it. And she actually watched his flesh burn off. And he rolled around on the ground, and took off," McGuire told FOX 35.
Police said as he was trying to put himself out, Avery dropped his wallet and I.D. in the process. That's what helped officers find him shortly afterwards. They charged him with attempted murder and arson.
Avery was flown to the burn unit of Shands Hospitals in Gainesville to be treated for those very serious burns.
