PennDOT Contractor Arraigned On $3.6M Theft Charge

Posted: Updated:

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) - A PennDOT contractor and inspector are free on bail after being arraigned on criminal charges in the theft of $3.6 million in taxpayers' money.

Prosecutors said Thursday that 62-year-old Thanh Nguyen (pron. UWEN) of King of Prussia falsified documents, laundered money and bribed a PennDOT-contracted inspector to steal public funds for herbicide spraying, litter cleanup and other maintenance of state highways and bridges.

A statewide investigating grand jury looking into alleged corruption and fraud in PennDOT District 6 in southeastern Pennsylvania alleges that companies controlled by Nguyen illegally collected the $3.6 million for work that was never performed.

Nguyen and the inspector, 54-year-old Robert Slamon of Shillington, were arraigned before a district judge in Bridgeport on charges that include corruption, theft and tampering. They were each released on $50,000 bail.
