Thursday Bears Blog: Uneventful day in Bourbonnais

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It was a fairly uneventful Thursday in Bourbonnais, but in an NFL training camp, that's often a good thing.

Head coach Marc Trestman said he wasn't thrilled with the offensive execution early in practice, and there were some notable misplays. But he felt Jay Cutler and the "O" got things rolling as practice continued.

No surprises on the injury front. Offensive lineman Kyle Long continues to do conditioning work in hopes of being back in pads Saturday. Cornerback Tim Jennings is also getting closer to a full return to practice.

Thursday was, however, our first chance of camp to catch up with Lance Briggs, who has been noticeably upbeat through the first week of training camp. Briggs admitted that 2013 was difficult on many fronts. Before the season even started, he says he was trying to come to grips with all the changes. Briggs says it was a shock to say goodbye to longtime teammates and coaches like Brian Urlacher and Lovie Smith all at once. Once the season began, things didn't get much better for the Pro-Bowler, as injuries limited him to just nine games.

Briggs says he's much happier this season, and is enjoying working his way through camp with all the new additions to the defense. To the naked eye, Briggs has looked fast and healthy so far, but he joked that he's, in fact, lost a step. Joke or not, Trestman didn't particularly agree with that assessment, saying a healthy Briggs will make the Bears defense markedly better.

I also had a chance to catch up with defensive lineman Willie Young, who the Bears signed as a free agent during the off-season. He made some fascinating comparisons between this new-look Bears defense, and the one he played on in Detroit. You can catch that interview Sunday on The Final Word.

That's it for me, and I'll be back in Bourbonnais on Monday.
