Being Caught On Camera: The Back Story

Posted: Updated:

Rule #1: Always assume the mic is hot and the camera is on.

Rule #2: See Rule #1.

On a show like Good Day LA, sometimes Rules #1 and #2 are easy to forget. I put my microphone on around 6:50 a.m. and take it off at 10:30 a.m. During those three and a half hours, we're on the set, off the set, in an interview, out of an interview, inside, outside – you get the point. It's kind of like reality TV; you forget the mics are on you and the cameras are around you constantly.

What happened this week wasn't exactly the case. I didn't forget the mic was on or that I was in the studio surrounded by cameras naturally. But it was a case of another typical day on Good Day LA, where we goof off and joke around (most of the time off-camera).

This week, I've been obsessed with this one song that's taken over my life! I am not even kidding… Sia's song, "Chandelier" is on repeat in my car, on my phone and at home. Watch out! I asked one of our director's to download the song and to play it once in a while when we bump in and out of commercial breaks. We play music all the time, so I figured why not add this song to the mix. So during the show, the song played and to my surprise at how quickly my request had been fulfilled I got super excited! We started to laugh. I put my hands up during the chores portion of the song and made some kind of a silly move, and we went into a commercial break.

Well, our Senior Executive Producer of GDLA, who also just so happens to also be an amazing photographer, ran out to take a picture. He takes all of our awesome “behind the scenes” pictures by the way. Anyway, he wasn't in time to catch the shot so he said jump up and I'll take your picture. I suggested playing the song again so I could really get into it. I grabbed my phone, plugged in my headphones and started to jam out. We moved toward the weather wall, because that part of the studio is well lit and far enough away from the set where we wouldn't interrupt the “Big Deal, No Big Deal” segment that was coming up.

See now it's all making sense…

So I start listening to the song. I'm waiting for the chorus part to come on so I can jump up and down and he can get that perfect shot. You get the point. I start messing around and dancing in an overly exaggerated way, completely being silly, getting into the song and making him laugh as he snaps away. And as all of this is happening, we come back from commercial break, the "Big Deal, No Big Deal" segment starts, but instead of getting into the discussion topics and ignoring me on the other side of the studio, my co-workers decide to draw attention to it and just go with the moment.

But of course…

The music is playing. I am in my own little world. I'm not really paying attention to the fact the camera is right there since in my mind I am in the clear. I am not supposed to be involved in the next segment anyway. I am safe. So I thought… My EP later laughed and said you were so into your song, you had your eyes shut half the time, had you had your eyes open you would have caught it earlier! LOL…

Earlier being the key word here….

I caught the monitor on the side and below the camera when I did, I saw myself, the green screen, the banner below me that read “Big Deal, No Big Deal” and well… you know the rest of the story!

That's pretty much how it happened. I think knowing the back story is important because it really was so random. At first, I was embarrassed of course, but then I started to see the humor in it and of course we played it up all day (actually all week) because we live for silly candid moments on Good Day LA.

It's been a fun week, filled with lots of laughs and my co-workers are having a good time imitating me and walking by blasting “Chandelier” every chance they get.  And I know this video will live on forever...and ever...thanks to Yahoo, my colleagues putting it on YouTube and who knows where else it will turn up.

I had the chance to demo Samsung's Gear VR recently. It's a virtual reality headset powered by a smartphone. Don't let that fool you though. It's impressive!
