GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Gainesville and Hall County education officials say they're working to accommodate new Central American refugee students this year.

Gainesville City Schools Superintendent Wanda Creel tells The Times a group of Central American students were practicing English and working on introducing themselves when she met them on the first day of classes last week.

Hall County Assistant Superintendent for teaching and learning Eloise Barron says the district is trying to pinpoint potential challenges unrelated to language barriers that refugee students may be facing.

Barron says the district is working on identifying students' social and emotional needs in addition to addressing academic challenges the children may be facing.
