The charity event was sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's CommunityNEXT. Over the last four years, the annual event has raised more than $200,000 for projects in Detroit through the Do It For Detroit Fund (Di4D). This year, funds will go to Detroit Firehouse Engine 33/Ladder 13. Located in a heavily populated neighborhood of Southwest Detroit, the firehouse which has served the area for more than a century. It's both underfunded and lacking equipment to daily fires and medical emergencies. Proceeds from the kickball tournament will help provide safety equipment, boots and clothing.

Pitch for Detroit was started by twenty-somethings Adam Blanck and Benjy Gordon who wanted to give back to their hometown. Money raised at the event has also helped provide rent subsidies for young adults who want to move to the city and micro-grants for small businesses and non-profits dedicated to improving the city.
