Burglar steals college championship rings

SMYRNA, Ga. -

Police say a thief snagged two college football championship rings and over $15,000 in other jewelry from a Smyrna home.

According to the Smyrna Police Department, the thief forced their way into a home in the 2700 block of Spring Drive sometime between July 16 and July 20.

Mel Whatley and his wife were on vacation celebrating their third wedding anniversary when the break in happened.

Among the items reportedly take were a 1995 Air Force Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championship ring and a 1998 Georgia Tech Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championship ring. The thief also got away snagged a Glock 9mm handgun.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Smyrna Police Department tip line at 1-844-SPD-TIPS or Atlanta Crime Stoppers at 404-557-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward.
