Minnesota Republicans unite behind primary winners

Posted: Updated:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

Hennepin County commissioner Jeff Johnson emerged from Tuesday's Republican primary for Minnesota governor with a victory and a lesson – this time the endorsement mattered and Republicans realize they must unite to win.

Three defeated gubernatorial candidates -- Scott Honour Kurt Zellers and Marty Seifert -- gathered Wednesday morning to throw their support behind Johnson in his campaign to unseat Gov. Mark Dayton. Johnson says he emerged from the crowded, competitive primary as a stronger candidate.

Johnson says as governor he would try to scale back automatic increases in the new minimum wage and would try to stop construction of a new legislative office building.

"I think you'll see me talking about making government work more with what it has,” Johnson said.

Minnesota DFL chairman Ken Martin says the contrast in the upcoming governor's race couldn't be more clear -- Johnson wants to take the state backward with tax cuts for millionaires and repeal minimum wage increases for lower income workers.
