WEST GOSHEN, Pa. -

A deadly accident at ShopRite on West Chester Pike in West Goshen claimed the life of 77-year-old Robert White, a long time West Goshen government official, on Wednesday.

"It was devastating," said Town Manager Casey Lalonde. White had been with the township since 1980. Most recently. he was elected to a 6th term as Township Supervisor and had held that position since 1992. Before that he served on the Planning Commission.

"For that much of a dedicated life of volunteer service to any municipality really shows his character," said Lalonde.

Investigators say White went to ShopRite around 12:30 Wednesday afternoon on his lunch break to get food. He was leaving the store when he was hit. He was pronounced dead at Chester County Hospital.

"A female driver of a pickup truck came through the parking lot in reverse and struck him and then went through the store wall," said Captain Gregory Stone with West Goshen Police.

White's neighbors on Woodview Lane are also saddened by the loss.

"When I heard I just said that's close to home and I hoped it was no one I knew. When I saw it was him my heart sunk a bit," said Josh Jaquette.

Maury and Trudy Caron have lived near White 35 years.

"We were both quite shocked. We know life does come to an end but unfortunately it happened to quickly. No goodbyes," said Trudy Caron. Her husband Maury said, "Robert has been a wonderful person. He's kept us up to date on everything. I just can't speak highly enough of him."

White is also a Navy Veteran and neighbors say a retired dentist.

Investigators say at this point it appears to be a terrible accident. The woman driver is cooperating and gave a statement. The District Attorney is working with Traffic Safety on the investigation.
