SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

A sea of pink has invaded the Southfield Civic Center Wednesday for the 17th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event happening Oct. 11.

Teams are being formed and fundraising will soon start. Last year there about 1,000 walkers who raised $1 million.

Much of that money stayed here to pay for support for those with breast cancer and it also goes to research to find a cure.

In metro Detroit this year, 3,200 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

As a breast cancer survivor Lisa Molletti knows more than her share about it.

"I'm good, I got a lot of support from family, friends and co-workers, I feel good," said Molletti who recently was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time. "It took me aback, but with the support I get from my friends and everyone around me, I'm not worried."

Molletti said that seeing the huge turnout at events like Making Strides Against breast Cancer  makes her feel emotional.

"At the same time,  to see that many people are willing to help so many others ... it's not about you, it's about everyone else around you."

Kroger is one of the biggest sponsors for the event and area stores are selling pink ribbons for a dollar. Change boxes will be left by the registers and a wishing well in the floral department.
