Mexican man gets prison in drug trafficking case

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - A Mexican man has been sentenced to 17 ½ years in an Arizona federal prison for drug trafficking.

Federal prosecutors say 40-year-old Luis Enrique Villegas-Lugo was sentenced Monday.

Villegas-Lugo, of Culiacan, Sinaloa, pleaded guilty in February to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine.

Authorities say the drug trafficking organization was investigated from July 2006 through September 2006 in Phoenix.

The ring allegedly imported methamphetamine from Mexico and transported it to a stash house in Phoenix and then distributed to customers.

During the investigation, law enforcement agents seized approximately 20 pounds of meth along with two handguns, two rifles and drug packaging materials from the stash house.

Villegas-Lugo was charged in the case in February 2009.
