Lucrative Grand Canyon contract up for bid again

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - One of the most lucrative contracts in the National Park Service is going out to bid for a third time, after Grand Canyon officials found the previous bids unacceptable.

The contract for lodging, food, retail and transportation services on the South Rim is expected to bring in nearly $1 billion in gross revenue over 15 years.

The contract first went out for bid a year ago. But Grand Canyon Superintendent Dave Uberuaga says the park didn't receive any bids that were responsive to the conditions of the contract.

Since then, the park has reduced the amount that the successful bidder would pay up front and increased the franchise fee to 14 percent. Uberuaga says he's hopeful that will entice bids.

Xanterra Parks & Resorts currently holds the contract.
