Rash of break ins hit Plymouth Township

Posted: Updated:
PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) - "It's very unnerving, I have kids here," says Plymouth Township's Joan Kopchia.

That sums up the rash of break ins in Plymouth Township.

Last year three homes were burglarized in the township of 30,000 people. In the past two weeks five homes have been hit, not including one botched break in.

"For some reason the individuals opted not to enter the home," says Det. Charlie Rozum of the Plymouth Township Police Department. "They broke the door wall in the rear of the home, but for whatever reason they opted to move down the street and break into another house."

Rozum says the home burglaries are happening north of Joy Road between Sheldon and Ridge between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., the time most people are working.

"It seems like they've probably been watching the houses because things like that normally happen at night," said Kopchia.

Once inside they look for flat screen TVs, computers and laptops.

Most of the homes burglarized don't have alarm systems. Rozum says it's not a bad idea to think about having one installed.

"All the homes that got broken into, the windows were locked and the doors were locked," he said. "Entry was forced into the homes by either breaking the window or forcing the door open. ... Again we're asking people to look around see what's going on in the neighborhood, keep an eye on your neighbor."

Police describe the burglars as white males between the ages of 15 and 25.

They may be driving a silver older model SUV or a gray Toyota Corolla with a rear spoiler.

Police say if they're not caught soon, they may expand their footprint.
