BEECHER, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) - One person is dead and another injured after a head-on crash Tuesday afternoon in south suburban Beecher, according to police.

Just after 1 p.m., a car and an SUV hauling a small trailer were southbound on Route 1 about a mile north of Eagle Lake Road, according to Illinois State Police.

The car pulled into the northbound lane of Route 1, attempting to pass the SUV, but the driver realized they would not be able to complete the pass with a semi approaching in the oncoming lane.

The car then tried to cut back into the southbound lane, but struck the rear corner of the trailer being pulled by the SUV, police said. The impact caused the SUV driver to lose control and cross into the northbound lane, where the vehicle was struck by the semi.

The SUV driver was killed in the crash, police said. The Will County Coroner's office could not be reached Tuesday evening to confirm the fatality.

The driver of the car was taken St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

No charges had been filed as of Tuesday evening as state police continue to investigate the crash.
