Police fatally shoot armed hit-and-run suspect

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Police fatally shot a hit-and-run suspect on Saturday night after he allegedly pointed a gun at officers.

Yellow crime scene tape was strung across a gas station at 35th Avenue and Camelback.

A Jeep Cherokee with bullet holes in the windows sat near a gas pump.

Phoenix police say their officers shot a man there just before midnight. He later died at the hospital.

"When an officer has a gun pointed at him or her, the normal response is to shoot at that individual," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

Police say a man driving a Jeep Cherokee was a suspect in a hit-and-run earlier in the night.

The victim got a license plate number, but not before he says the suspect fired multiple shots in the air.

Police say they tried to stop the suspect, but he wouldn't pull over.

The air unit and SWAT got involved.

Just before midnight, police say the suspect pulled into this gas station.

"Well, he did stop at the convenience mart and that's when officers moved in to try to take him in to custody, but unfortunately he pointed a gun at one of our officers," said Thompson.

An employee inside the gas station says it was his first week of work. He says there were about four to six customers inside when they heard gunshots. He says they hit the floor and then looked out to see a swarm of police.

"These were our SWAT officers. These were our special assignments unit. They knew the individual was armed, that's one of the main reasons they were involved in this surveillance," said Thompson.

Thompson says the officers involved will be on administrative leave pending
the outcome of an investigation.

"When an officer is involved in a shooting, it's a traumatic experience. Anytime they're forced to use deadly physical force, that weighs heavily on the minds of the officers involved," said Thompson.

No officers were injured.

Police say the victim in the hit-and-run was not injured either.

They caution victims of hit-and-runs about following vehicles and to be aware that something like this can happen.

The man who was shot and killed has not been identified.
