ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

A pedestrian was struck by a Green Line light rail train Monday afternoon in St. Paul. The accident happened just after 1 p.m. on University Avenue near Chatsworth Street.

The pedestrian, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Regions Hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. Metro Transit's preliminary investigation indicates that the man was illegally walking in a non-designated crosswalk between the eastbound and westbound light rail tracks at the time of the crash.

The westbound train was held for one hour before the scene was cleared. Meanwhile, riders were transferred by bus between the Snelling Avenue Station and the Rice Street Station near the Capitol. Light rail service was fully restored shortly after 2 p.m.

The train operator has been relieved and will undergo drug and alcohol testing, which is standard protocol. Metro Transit police continue to investigate the incident; however, they do not expect to release any other information today.
