ATLANTA, Ga. -

Police confirm a Cobb County firefighter has been arrested after a domestic dispute that happened over the weekend.

According to an incident report, police were called to the Omni Hotel, located on Marietta Street in Atlanta, early Sunday morning around 2:30 a.m.

Shellie Bennett, the victim, told a hotel security officer she had just gotten in a fight with her husband, 50-year-old Joseph Richard Bennett Jr. The security officer called police.

Bennett told police her husband accused her of being gone too long and claims her husband grabbed her by the wrists and threw her to the floor.

The following statement is included in the incident report: “Mrs. Bennett then stated that she then tried to get away and in an attempt to break free, Mr. Bennett then grabbed that back of her head and threw her to the ground once again. Ms. Bennett then stated that when she hit the floor the second time, she fell directly onto her face causing lacerations to her lips, a swollen left eye, bruises and abrasions to the right side of her face as well as both of her knees and on the inside of both of her wrists.”

In the report, the responding officer says Shellie Bennett sustained a broken nose as a result of her head being slammed to the ground. Bennett told police it wasn't the first time something like this had happened with her husband. She also told police she is legally blind.

Police found Mr. Bennett asleep on his bed. He was charged with Aggravated Battery and Battery.

Bennett is a Lieutenant with the Cobb County Fire Department.
