Man impersonating SRP worker in phone scam

Posted: Updated:

CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) - Chandler police someone pretending to be a Salt River Project employee is trying to bilk local businesses for money.

Police spokesman Seth Tyler says a man posing over the telephone as an SRP worker has been telling business owners to pay for overdue utility bills.

Tyler says the scammer also tells victims that their power will be shut off within an hour if the bill is not paid in full.

According to authorities, the caller instructs victims to get a pre-paid credit card and provide an access code to him.

SRP officials say residential and business customers are never contacted by phone over past due bills nor would they be threatened with immediate termination of their power.

They say anyone approached by the caller should call police or verify their account by calling SRP.
