House speaker candidates: Quit counting your chicks before they hatch

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - There is a frantic game of "my list is bigger than your list" going on in this town as the two main combatants to become the next speaker of the Michigan House are trying to one-up each other.

Thank you Kevin Cotter and Al Pscholka.

Apparently, the standard boiler plate language that nobody really talks about this race until the GOP secures the majority, apparently that is inoperative, as Ronnie Zeigler use to say on behalf of Tricky Dick the President.

It was Mt. Pleasant second-termer Mr. Kevin who blew the wheels off that buggy when he trotted out his "list" of 25 supposed supporters. This was just after West Michigan's Mr. Pscholka boasted he had netted Rep. Lisa Posthumus Lyons, who at one point, had her eye on the job, too.

Three days later, not to be out-done, here comes the Pscholka list: I see your 25 and raise you four.

Note the use of the word "supposed."

If either of these guys really believes those backers are absolutely-positutely nailed-down, neither of them is qualified to run the house.

Ask former Rep. Lynn Jondahl of East Lansing. The popular liberal and chair of house taxation marched into the closed door caucus with enough votes to nail down the speakership only to walk out scratching his head wondering why he wasn't.

Or in more modern times, ask Andy Meisner. He had the backing of sitting Gov. Jennifer Granholm and others who were not so sure that Andy Dillon's Democratic pedigree was pure enough. Mr. Dillon, without the full support of labor, emerged the winner.

Part of the reason you can't nail down the pre-vote tally is because some mecurial lawmakers pledge to support all the candidates running for speaker hoping that they never compare lists.

On top of that Messrs. Cotter and Pscholka may think they are the only ones in the hunt, but you could have 20 new lawmakers coming into the caucus, which is a hefty batch of votes, and if they decide to play king maker, they could determine the winner.

And then there is one more variable. If somehow the Democrats pick up six seats, somebody named Tim Greimel may be the next speaker and the Republicans will be relegated to minority status.

In other words, the public display of egg counting before the little chickies are hatched, is one sandwich away from being m-e-a-n-i-n-g-l-e-s-s.
