Guns found near Conn. playground

Posted: Updated:

HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) - Hamden police say they're trying to determine who hid two handguns near a playground at a child care center - a discovery that scared local parents.

Police say a .22-caliber handgun and a 9 mm handgun were found hidden near the Keefe Center Playground as officers worked what they called a "crime suppression detail" on Sunday.

Parents of children who attend the day care say they're shocked. They say children could have found the guns and hurt someone.

The discovery came after police say they arrested a New Haven man on weapons charges after they stopped his car and found a loaded .357 Magnum handgun in the engine compartment.

It's not clear if the arrest and the guns at the playground are related.

Law enforcement officials from coast to coast say street gangs are shying away from wearing their colors and are covering up or even altering their tattoos to avoid detection by police.  Hartford, Connecticut, Police Sgt. Johnmichael O'Hare says gone are the days when the Bloods wore red from head to toe. All you'll see now, he says, is maybe a red handkerchief sticking out of a back pocket.
