Monitoring your kids' driving in real time

Many new Ford and GM cars have built-in technology that allows you to monitor speed, signaling, and navigation when your child is driving.

But when it comes to this type of digital snooping, teens and their parents often have differing opinions. Kids may call it an invasion of privacy. Most parents, of course, will likely feel otherwise.

Who wouldn't want to know the driving habits of your son or daughter?

The MyFord MyKey technology is intended to help parents restrict bad driving habits of teens by increasing seat belt use, limiting vehicle top speeds and decreasing audio volume.

AAA spokesman Robert Sinclair said the technology isn't new but is becoming standard in many cars.

GM's Family Link service also lets parents monitor where their teens are driving.

Several other apps and devices like Esurance's DriveSafe tool, which was recently adopted in New York State, provide similar services and plug right into a car's diagnostics center to send real-time information to parents.

Carroll Lachnit from online automotive site Edmunds.com says more digital snooping is likely on its way.

In the end, advocates say tighter monitoring of kids is about safety. Statistics back that up. For every mile driven, teen drivers between 16 and19 are three times more likely than older drivers to be in a fatal crash.
