Police officer alerts residents to Avondale home fire

Posted: Updated:
AVONDALE, Ariz. - Three people got out of their burning home early Thursday morning thanks to a police officer.

It happened in an Avondale neighborhood near Litchfield and Yuma roads.

The home caught fire around midnight, but thanks to the officer, no one was hurt.

The officer was driving around the neighborhood and noticed the blaze.

According to Sgt. Brandon Busse, no one in the home immediately responded so the officer broke a window and attempted to kick open the front door.

A man then came to the door, and the officer was able to get the residents outside.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and put the flames out, but the carport area and the back of the house suffered a lot of damage.

Busse said the initial investigation indicates the fire may have started in the laundry room where a water heater was located.

The people who live in the house are displaced for at least Thursday.

It's unclear whether the home had working smoke detectors.
