Lakewood, CA -

Sheriff's homicide detectives are investigating the discovery of a body in a drainage well on a Los Angeles County freeway. City News Service reports Caltrans workers doing maintenance early Thursday found the badly decomposed body along the center divider of the 605 Freeway in Lakewood.

Sheriff's Lt. Alicia Malone says the identity of the dead person was not immediately determined.

The HOV lanes of the freeway in both directions were closed during the investigation.

From Bob DeCastro:

The badly decomposed body of a man was found down a narrow storm drain in the center divider of the 605 freeway in Lakewood.

Caltrans maintenance crews working on the southbound 605 near the Carson exit made the discovery just after midnight Thursday morning.

The body was lifted through the storm drain with a pulley. A coroner's autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.

Homicide detectives say it is still unclear how the body got there. They say the body was in the advanced stages of decomposition and there were no obvious signs of trauma.

The San Gabriel River runs parallel to the 605. Officials are also trying to determine if the body may have drifted downstream.

The death investigation backed up traffic on the 605 through the Lakewood area. Carpool lanes were closed between Del Amo and Carson. The lanes were we opened around 7 this morning.
