Police continue to investigate into abandoned toddler

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -

The College Park Police Department is trying to figure out who left a 2-year-old boy behind a dumpster early Thursday morning.

Police say a woman called 911 after she said a homeless person found the toddler and flagged her down. According to police, the child was found alive behind a dumpster at a gas station on Old National Highway. Detectives say the story is not adding up and they say they are shifting their focus to the young woman who called police to report the abandoned child.

The boy's mother met with police Thursday afternoon. Destiny Walker, 27, showed up at the College Park Police Department Thursday evening and left the station about an hour after she arrived. College Park Police say they are not charging Walker.

Walker told police she left her son with her boyfriend while she went out to find a job.

"So she left the child with the boyfriend, to babysit, she said that the boyfriend told her that he had to go to work and he paid a babysitter to keep the child," said Sgt. Jeff Hightower with College Park Police.

Police say they are now looking for the babysitter. Police believe the 17-year-old girl who called 911 is the babysitter.

"We have nothing to confirm that their was a homeless man," said Hightower. "We have not confirmed that the child was behind the dumpster. The only information we are getting on that is from the initial caller."

Friends of Walker and her boyfriend say they can't believe the parents would have abandoned their child.

According to police, Walker's boyfriend is expected to come in for questioning Friday afternoon. Police are currently trying to locate him.

Police tell FOX 5 Atlanta that the child appeared to be in good condition and is now in Division of Family and Children Services custody.

Police say the child was spotted on a surveillance camera walking with Walker's boyfriend around 5:30 a.m. The little boy was found about 30 minutes later.

FOX 5 Atlanta News will continue to follow this developing story.
