Police: Missing NJ Teen Found Dead In Israeli Forest

Posted: Updated:

ISRAEL-Israeli police say they have recovered the body of the American student who disappeared last week.

23-year-old Aharon Sofer from Lakewood, New Jersey, was a student at a Jewish religious school in Israel.

Searchers found Sofer's body in the Jerusalem forest where police say he became separated from a friend he was walking with last Friday.

Investigators say they still don't know how Sofer died.

While Israeli police remain tight- lipped, Sofer's cousin actress Rena Sofer may be shedding some light on what happened.

She tweeted, "Thank you all for your prayers. Aaron's body was found today. No foul play thank God. He had a tragic fall in the mountains."

Governor Chris Christie released the following statement on the passing of Aharon Sofer:

"We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Aharon Sofer on their unthinkable loss. As parents, Mary Pat and I cannot imagine the sense of grief and sadness that engulfs them at this moment. We add our thoughts and prayers to those of so many in New Jersey and around the world for this family and the community of Lakewood. Together, we can help them deal with this awful tragedy."
