City of Phoenix withdraws plan to place parking meters at mountain parks

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - The City of Phoenix on Friday announced they would be withdrawing a plan to place parking meters at several mountain parks including Piestewa Peak.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton issued a statement on the Parks & Rec Department decision.

I support the decision of our Parks Department. I look forward to hearing other options from the department and the Parks and Recreation Board for improving traffic management at our trail heads,” said Stanton.

On Thursday citizens came to the Parks & Recreation Department meeting and voiced their opposition for the plan.

"It seemed kind of rediculous... it speaks to the fact that the hiking trails around the valley are one of the most popular attractions, not just for tourists but everyday citizens " said one hiker.

The parks department claims the money would have gone to maintaining the trail and parking lot, hikers say it was just trying to reach into taxpayer's pockets to fix a budget shortfall.

"My message to them is try to find other sources of money," said another hiker.
