ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Central Florida coach George O'Leary has fired a pair of defensive assistants and a football staffer.
Two of the nation's most storied college football programs will matchup when Notre Dame and No. 25 Florida State meet in the Champs Sports Bowl Dec. 29.
The Seminoles and Fighting Irish bring a high-powered matchup to the Florida Citrus Bowl thanks to a pair of second-year coaches that have energized their respective fan bases. The schools have met six times previously with the Seminoles holding a 4-2 edge. FSU also beat Notre Dame 31-26 in the 1996 Orange Bowl.
The Champs is normally a matchup of ACC and Big East schools, but has the option of selecting the independent Irish (8-4) one time over the life of the current four-year contract. | South Carolina and Nebraska will play in the Capital One Bowl Jan. 2 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando.
Both teams accepted their bids Sunday. It will be the first meeting between the schools since 1987 and first-ever postseason matchup.
Nebraska (9-3) is wrapping up its first year in the Big Ten and has a chance to post 10 wins for the third straight season. The Cornhuskers are making their fourth straight bowl appearance, with their last win coming in the 2009 Holiday Bowl over Arizona. South Carolina (10-2) is also making its fourth straight bowl appearance, but hasn't won a bowl game since Houston in the 2006 Liberty Bowl. | ||||
